Black belts are required to earn a certain number of merit points to qualify for testing.
They must track any earned merit points and must get an instructor signoff on each merit point. Merit Point Tracking Sheet
The following is a list of merit points that can be earned.
Physical/Mental based merit points
- 10 points to assist at a testing (Demonstrations, or assisting testing students)
- 20 points to compete/volunteer at tournament
- At home Training
- 5 points 30 pushups and 50 situps a day for 30 days
- 5 points 200 kicks a day for 30 days
- 5 points 50 of: low block, front block, high block, high punch, mid punch a day for 30 days
- 5 points for other agreed upon workout plan
- 5 points to read a chapter of the TKD Encyclopedia
- X points to read another martial arts book, Discuss with instructor to set points and goal
- A Killing Art
- The Art of War
- The Book of the 5 Rings
- etc.
School Leadership based Merit Points
- 5 points bring a friend to class (Not brought before)
- +10 if they join
- 15 points to help with a demo or other promotional event
- 5 points to help with a testing (test board, conductor, etc. )
- 1 point per class you assist with (teaching patterns, etc.)
- 2 points per class you are head instructor (run the entire class)
Community Leadership
- 5-30 points for clean up project
- Adopt a highway
- Clean up a local park
- X points to volunteer at your school
- Discuss with instructor to set points and goal
